Working from home has become the new normal for many of us, but makeshift workspaces at kitchen tables or couches aren’t always kind to our spines. At Wetaskiwin Family Chiropractic, we see the effects of poor posture and improper ergonomics every day. The good news? A few simple tweaks can protect your spine and help you feel better while you work.
1. Start With Your Chair
Your chair plays a huge role in how your spine is supported throughout the day.
Look for:
- A chair with lumbar support (or use a small pillow behind your lower back)
- Feet flat on the floor, knees at a 90-degree angle
- Hips slightly higher than your knees
- Shoulders relaxed, not hunched
Tip: Avoid working from your bed or couch for long periods, they’re the fastest route to back and neck pain.
2. Raise Your Screen to Eye Level
When your screen is too low, your head leans forward, putting extra pressure on your neck and spine.
Try this:
- Use a laptop stand, stack of books, or external monitor to raise your screen
- Your eyes should meet the top third of your screen when sitting tall
- Keep the monitor about an arm’s length away
3. Align Your Keyboard and Mouse
Poor wrist and shoulder alignment can lead to tension and nerve irritation.
Do this:
- Keep your keyboard and mouse close to avoid reaching
- Elbows should stay close to your body at a 90-100 degree angle
- Wrists should be neutral, not bent up or down
4. Take Regular Movement Breaks
Even the best ergonomic setup won’t help if you sit still all day. Your spine loves movement.
Every 30-60 minutes:
- Stand up and stretch
- Walk around the room
- Do some gentle neck rolls, shoulder shrugs, or a quick spinal twist
Set a reminder if you tend to forget, your body will thank you!
5. Incorporate Supportive Habits
Support your spinal health with holistic habits that keep your whole body in balance:
- Stay hydrated to keep spinal discs healthy
- Use a standing desk for part of the day if possible
- Stretch your chest, hips, and back daily (check out our stretching blog post!)
- Get regular chiropractic care to correct imbalances and stay aligned
