A little pain might not seem like a big deal at first, just a sore back after chores or an ache in your knee after a busy day. But when it sticks around, it can slowly change how we move, rest, and take part in the things we enjoy. Over time, those little changes can add up.
That’s where TENS machines can help.
These small, easy-to-use devices send gentle electrical pulses through the skin via adhesive pads placed on or near the area that hurts. These pulses work by interrupting pain signals before they reach your brain and by encouraging your body to release natural painkillers called endorphins. This combination helps reduce the feeling of pain without the need for medication.
How to Use a TENS Machine:
- Place the pads on clean, dry skin near the painful area. The exact placement depends on your pain; common spots are around sore muscles, joints, or along nerve pathways.
- Turn on the device and adjust the intensity to a comfortable level; you should feel a gentle tingling or buzzing, never sharp or painful.
- Use it for about 20–30 minutes per session, up to several times a day if needed. Many people find relief after just one session, but regular use can provide ongoing benefits.
- Replace the pads regularly (every few weeks or as they lose stickiness) to ensure good contact and effective treatment.
They’re safe, drug-free, and great for managing common issues like sore joints, muscle tension, or old injuries flaring up again.
They’re also portable and convenient, easy to keep at home, bring to the farm, or take on vacation. If you’re curious, we have loaner units at the clinic to try out, and if you find it helpful, owning your own unit is affordable (usually around $40–$60).
Whether you’re helping out with the grandkids, tending the garden, or putting in long days on your feet, a TENS machine can be a simple way to keep you moving and feeling your best.
